The network of 37,000km gas pipes transports gas 24 hours a day, fuelling the energy needs of approximately 2.6 million customers across the region.
In a programme of work agreed with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in 2001, Northern Gas Networks is committed to replacing all metal gas mains located within 30 metres of a property with modern polyethylene pipes over the next 30 years, ensuring a safe and secure supply network.
Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, along with Morgan Sindall and Enterprise, is undertaking gas mains replacement, diversions, reinforcements and reinstatement on behalf of Northern Gas Networks. The partnership’s annual programme involves the replacement of more than 528km of gas mains and approximately 40,000 service pipes, with Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions replacing 200km of the network each year.
Minimising the impact our work has on the communities in which we operate is a key focus for the integrated delivery team, which has been involved in numerous community projects, such as the Clean Tyne Project, a local partnership which aims to clean up the river and raise public awareness of environmental issues..
Dedicated Customer Service Advisors play an essential role in providing pro-active, up-front communications by engaging with residents to keep them informed of our progress, helping to build strong relationships with local councils, businesses and customers. A centralised call centre is available for customer enquiries, with all customer service employees undergoing Institute of Customer Service accredited training. Our on-site teams are also trained to deliver effective customer service at a one to one level with customers affected by our works.
Our dedication to providing customer service excellence is achieving year on year improvements, which is reflected in the Ofgem (Office of the Gas & Electricity Markets) customer satisfaction surveys, with Northern Gas Networks consistently ranking highly across the eight distribution networks.
