With ‘Safety First’ being a core value of its business, Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions is delighted to have won a Road Safety in the Community Award from Brake, the national road safety charity.

The Fleet Safety Forum Awards for Excellence, held on Friday 6th June, are designed to recognise the achievements of those companies working to help reduce the one in four road deaths involving an at-work driver.

The team initiated a wide variety of initiatives during 2007, aiming to improve employee's road safety awareness and driving skills, including:

  • Proactive driver assessments, coaching and behavioural training
  • Well Driven? Vehicle stickers incorporating the Brake logo
  • Regular health checks for employees
  • Encouragement for employees to pledge to drive safely
  • Internal promotion of Road Safety Week throughout the UK
  • Roadshow tours to local schools and sponsoring banners for the 'Let Kids Live - Slow Down Around Schools and Homes' campaign.
  • Using Brake's research within the business to influence a range of safety strategies

Brent Mitchell, Head of Support Services spoke about the awards: "We are absolutely thrilled to have received these awards from Brake. As a business we provide infrastructure solutions to the utility industry, therefore the safety of our staff and the general public is of paramount importance to us and our customers. We will continue to work with and support Brake during 2008 and hope to maintain the momentum."

BBUS also received a highly commended certificate in the category of Company Driver Safety Award - medium fleet.

All revenue from the awards ceremony went to Brake, to help fund life-saving educational work and care services for crash victims.
